Travelling alone can be very rewarding and exciting. You only need to consider your needs, go where ever you please. But the downside is that you need to think about safety a bit more. Here are a few tips for people travelling alone:
• Research your destination. Know where best beaches, museums or major sights are
• Choose your accommodation carefully. Pick a well-known hotel in a safe area
• If you are worried about security at the hotel, take a padlock with you
• Leave your itinerary with a friend back home, and know where your embassy is in your holiday destination
• If you are taking an organised group holiday, check the size and age range of it. If possible get into a group where you think you will feel most comfortable
• Take a good book with you, to read when you are at a restaurant, or just to pass time
• Make yourself accessible for new friends – if that’s what you want. Look out for other people travelling on their own, often a simple smile or a frienly look is enough to start up a conversation
• Always ask the hotel about the areas to stay away from
• On public transport sit next to other women or women with children
• When you are asking for directions ask from women or men with children
• For women: if you don’t want male attention, avoid eye contact. It may mean more in other cultures. You can also wear a wedding ring to deter unwanted attention
• Keep useful local phone numbers saved on your mobile
